In 2001, the Cape Fear Jazz Society and the UNCW Music Department began a collaboration to raise funds
for a scholarship to go to deserving Jazz Studies students. The CFJS provides a vocalist to sing with the
UNCW Big Band and sometimes with a small jazz ensemble.

This year’s featured vocalist will be Kathy Gelb, who is a fine jazz musician in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald, June Christy and Carmen McRae. Coming from a musical family, Kathy grew up surrounded by the music of the swing era. She has sung most of her life and has worked with most of the major jazz musicians in North Carolina in some capacity, from club work to concerts to master classes. She was a member of the jazz vocalese group, String of Pearls, and is the vocalist with the North Carolina Repertory Orchestra.

For the past 20 years she has worked primarily with husband, Gregg, in many different settings.
We welcome Kathy to Wilmington and look forward to her performance with the UNCW Big Band,
which will be directed by Jerald Shynett.

Over the years, 24 students have benefited from this scholarship! Let’s help continue this great tradition of partnership with UNCW in helping young jazz musicians finance their education,
thus promoting the continuation and growth of JAZZ.

All profits from the concert go to the CFJS Scholarship Fund, which also accepts donations throughout the year. Many contributions have been memorial donations---what a meaningful way to honor the memory of a jazz lover by giving, in his or her memory, to a fund that perpetuates their favorite style of music.
The Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort generously provides a room.
