Jan 7th We rang in a “Grand Year” of celebrating the CFJS 10th Anniversary with a film entitled “Count Basie at Carnegie Hall” in the new UNCW Cultural Arts Building

 Jan 27, The Winard Harper Sextet performed at UNCW

 “OUR Sean Higgins, CFJS Scholarship winner” now plays with the group!!  Sean spent 4 years at UNCW. We all got to know and love him.

  He’s now living in NYC and performing with well known jazz artists (Wycliff Gordon for one).

 Feb 1 – 3, The 27th Annual North Carolina Jazz Festival featured the world’s finest Traditional Jazz musicians. Three major sponsors -Morgan Stanley, WECT-TV, and CFJS participating.

Feb 4th program “An Afternoon with Melva Houston” unfortunately was cancelled due to illness. However CFJS member and favorite Wilmington vocalist, Dusty Long, Keyboardist-Vocalist, Jack Krupicka, and Dick Van Gorder on Sax stepped in for an amazing performance at UNCW Cultural Arts Bldg.

 Feb 9th First Fri Jazz at the Museum, moved to the 2nd Friday

this month.  We were treated to the romantic music of Julie Rehder and Jack Krupicka as an early “Valentine’s” gift. This entire series is co-presented by CFJS and is sponsored by Gayle and Harry Van Velsor.

 Feb 22nd  Rachel Price Trio & The John Brown Quintet at Thalian Hall.  John Brown, that amazing bassist from Duke, also appeared at UNCW in 07.

 

March 2nd “First Friday Jazz” featured the Laura McFayden Quartet at

  Cape Fear Museum ..

Mar 4th CFJS Program Meeting featured a DVD presentation on the late Ed Bradley,

Jazz lover-jazz promoter and host of “Jazz from Lincoln Center ”, UNCW Cultural Arts Bldg.

 March 15th CFJS attended Wilmington ’s Cine Noir Festival.  Friend of Jazz, Rhonda Bellamy with the Black Arts Alliance sent a personal invitation to all members of CFJS to attend The Six Annual Cine Noir Film Festival opening night at the Cameron Art Museum with a reception with live jazz featuring Benny Hill & friends.

 March 21st, The Cape Fear Jazz Society’s 10th Birthday Celebration began with a Cocktail Buffet Reception in the Thalian Ballroom followed by the fabulous Count Basie Orchestra in Concert.  The Celebration continued with an “After Party” at the Blockade Runner Hotel, Wrightsville Beach with cocktails, food, and more Jazz!

 

WHQR Axes Jazz

Two excellent locally produced programs Big Bands, Blues, and Ballads

Too, with CFJS members and hosts, Gano Evans and Two’s Company featuring Gano and wife Beverly were also eliminated.

 

 April 4th “First Friday Jazz” at The Cape Fear Museum featured the Dusty Long Trio.  A new stage was introduced for better viewing and “Night Club” type lighting.

 April 13th Jazz Clinic with Stefon Harris 3-4 pm CA Recital Hall

with UNCW Big Band.  Jon Tucker and Taylor Lee, scholarship recipients.

May 4thFirst Friday Jazz” at Airlie Gardens presented The Gary Lamb Quartet

May 6th Sunday Jazz In The Park at the Wrightsville Beach Municipal Park with Chris Luther Quartet, Laura McFayden Quartet, and The U S Air Force Rhythm in Blue Jazz Ensemble.

 

 June 1st “First Friday Jazz” at Airlie Gardens with Greg Eavey & The Imposters 

 

 June 17th CFJS Annual Dinner Meeting; The Holiday Inn Sun Spree,  Wrightsville Beach, election of Board of Director meeting with “Live Jazz” with Kevin, Troy, and Ryan and dancing this year!

 

July 6th “First Friday Jazz” at Airlie Gardens featured The Jim Felds Sextet.

July 19th concert with trombonist and educator, Slide Hampton in the

UNCW Recital Hall, Cultural Arts Bldg performing with various members of the UNCW jazz faculty. What an exciting evening that was!

 

 JULY 27th –Cape Fear Jazz favorite, Prince Taylor with the Kevin Kolb Trio entertained a large crowd of Jazz Lovers at Water Street Restaurant.  Thanks Harper, let’s do it more often!

 

  Aug 3rdFirst Friday Jazz” at Airlie Gardens presented Tropical Jazz-“Sea Pans” 

 

Aug 31st  Water Street Restaurant Jazz vocalist LIZ PINA presented a musical fundraiser event, hosted by the Coastal Horizon Center with THE KEVIN KOLB TRI0, featuring TROY PIERCE on drums and DOUG IRVING on bass. Also with GRENALDO FRAZIER DUSTY LONG PRINCE TAYLOR TREVLYN FORD THE JOHN DAIL & ROSS DUKIE DUO, LAURA McFAYDEN and WAAV’s RHONDA BELLAMY also doing vocals.

 

Sept 14th AQUA VIVA’S new CD release at CAMERON ART MUSEUM . Joining David Pray were Jennifer Ford and musicians who performed on the CD: Kevin Kolb -keys, Leroy Harper Jr., & Rich Zimmerman –sax, East African drumming sensation, Cheick Sissoko. The CD European in flavor, a first for the Wilmington market.

 

  Sept 15th, Kenan Auditorium “BEWITCHED”, a tribute to Rogers & Hart, Staring jazz singer, Banu Gibson, with her Hot Jazz Trio with Dr.Frank Bongiorno, Dr. Philip Furia, and Dr. Laurie Patterson providing the 6th annual benefit by CFJS, WHQR, the Music, Creative Writing and Cultural Arts Departments of UNCW.  

 

Sept 20th Cultural Arts Bldg. Recital Hall a performance by Mike Waddell and Bob Russell, playing some of their original music,

 Oct 5 Fri “First Friday Jazz” at Airlie Gardens : Kevin Kolb Trio featured favorite

vocalist, Prince Taylor. 

 

Oct 6th Jazz Nite @ Scottish Rite concert featured the Brubeck Brothers Quartet-Chris & Dan Brubeck, Mike DeMicco, & Chuck Lamb. Pre-concert master class conducted by Chris Brubeck at New Hanover High School . Also pre show dinner buffet catered by Angie’s Catering

 

Oct 12th Gene Bertoncini, world famous guitarist appeared at Cape Fear Community College for a master class and concert. Thanks Marc Siegel!

 

 Oct 19th In the Cultural Arts Building Recital Hall a Memorial Jazz Concert for Guenther Skiba, CFJS loyal member and jazz lover, with proceeds going to the jazz scholarship fund at UNCW.  .

 

Oct 21st CFJS Sunday Program featured a fun afternoon with a DVD presentation at UNCW Cultural Arts Center , “Les Paul, Chasing Sound”.

 

Nov 1st World renown Jazz Violinist, Regina Carter Quartet with Darryl Harper, clarinet; Xavier Davis, piano; Matthew Parrish, bass and Alvester Garnett, drums performed in concert for UNCW “Presents Arts in Action” Performance Series at Kenan Auditorium.

Nov 2nd Bob Russell Quartet featured Mike Waddell, Arlin Strader, & Ray Malach,   at Cape Fear Museum to open the 07 First Friday Jazz at the Museum Series. 

 

 Nov 5th, Cape Fear Community College Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Jeff Simmons appeared at The Soap Box.

 

Nov 6th UNCW Jazz Guitar Ensemble -“The Wire Choir” under the direction of Bob Russell in the Recital Hall of the Cultural Arts Bldg

 

Nov 11, Jazz/Blues vocalist and CFJS member Willie E. Atkinson with his Transitional Jazz Quartet performed in concert at the Veteran’s Day Concert at Orringer Auditorium at Craven Community College , New Bern , NC .

 

 Nov 14th The UNCW Faculty Woodwind Quartet performed in the Recital Hall -Cultural Arts Bldg.

 

Nov 15th Justin Hoke performed jazz guitar with a combo of fellow students in the Recital Hall of the Cultural Arts Bldg. 

Nov 16th, at a recital by UNCW Junior student Jessica Coppola, Jerral Shynett sat in on piano and CFJS board member, Doug Irving, on upright bass, accompanied Miss Coppola with two jazz vocals, “Body and Soul”,&  “I Remember You”.

 

Nov 18, CFJS members, Willie and Jacqueline Atkinson presented “Giants of the Big Band Era”, an overview of the Big Band/Swing Era at UNCW Cultural Arts Building .

 

 Nov 30th presented the UNCW Jazz Ensemble in the Recital Hall of the Cultural Arts Building .  

 

 Dec 2nd CFJS Annual Holiday Dinner Party, biggest and best yet with Live Jazz featuring “The Doug Irving Trio” and that famous Holiday Raffle at Savannah ’s-Wrightsville Beach

 

 Dec 5, UNCW Student Honors Recital in the Beckwith Recital Hall of the Cultural Arts Building .

  

Dec 7th Julie Rehder & Jack Krupicka entertained at First Friday Jazz-Cape Fear Museum with holiday “hits” and Jazz favorites from two of our favorite entertainers.
